Club By-Laws
Please follow these rules which have been developed over the years for safe and proper running of the Club to the benefit of all Members.
Sailing Independently
Members including Cadets are encouraged to sail independently of organised
club activities provided that the Rules in Sections E & F are strictly followed. Put simply, Cadets that have the necessary qualifications and Parental consent may sail EXCEPT in Offshore winds. In offshore winds there must be at least two boats on the water helmed by adult members. Nothing improves your sailing skills like time spent on the water.
A - General
- The Ground in the Compound shall not be disturbed and in works or levelling
permitted without the authority of the South Ayrshire Council or their
successors.
- The club shall not engage in the business of boat hiring.
- All equipment shall be properly stored and the Club shall not allow old gear or
equipment to accumulate on the ground.
- Fuel shall not be kept in the Club premises except in the fuel store by
permission of the Sailing Captain.
- The Club shall comply with instructions, which may be given by, or on behalf of South Ayrshire Council or their successors as at to the route to be followed when the boats are being taken to or from the beach. Every effort must be made to avoid the creation of obstruction on the esplanade so that there may be no interference with the rights of the public.
- All members’ boats and gear including trolleys must be removed from the Club premises within one month of the end of the sailing season, except with the written permission of the Honorary Secretary.
- The club is not responsible for damage to members’ property within the Club
premises. Members using club property shall be responsible for any damage thereto unless whilst acting on behalf of the Club.
- No alcoholic liquor may be consumed on the club premises except as authorised by the General Committee in conformity with the licensing laws.
- The Club Burgee and the Red Ensign shall only be flown from the Club Flagstaff during authorised meetings of the Club.
- Members shall at all times have the privilege of introducing visitors to the Club, subject to such regulations which may be made from time to time by the
General Committee.
- A Member introducing visitors shall enter his/her own name and the name and
address of each Visitor in a book which shall be specially kept for this purpose in the clubhouse and which shall show in the date of each visit.
- Visitors and Associate Members may sail with a Member, but shall not take part in a race without the permission of the Officer of the Day.
- Temporary members may take part in races during their period of membership.
Any Member having a complaint shall put such a complaint in writing to the
Honorary Secretary.
B - The Clubhouse
- No sailing gear may be kept within the Clubhouse or changing rooms without
permission of an Officer of the Club.
- Nothing shall be affixed to the notice board without prior consent of the
Honorary Secretary or the convenor or Secretary or any Committee.
- Stiletto heels may not be worn in the Clubhouse.
- Members wearing wet gear may not enter the Clubroom except on special
occasions authorised by the General Committee.
- The Clubhouse may not be used as a bathing station.
- The Clubhouse shall be reserved for Committee Meetings at times to be notified by the Honorary Secretary on the Club notice board.
- Parents are asked to restrain their children from playing in the Clubhouse.
- Radios and music instruments shall not be played in the Clubhouse except at
social functions.
- Any member losing a Club key must report the loss to the Honorary Secretary as soon as possible.
- The Officer of the Day room shall be out of bounds during racing except to those on duty.
- No dogs shall be allowed in the Clubhouse.

During organised function in the Clubhouse e.g. lectures or dances, the
Clubhouse will be exclusively reserved for the exclusive use of members and
guests attending the function
C - For Boat Owners
- Each owner when allocated a berth in the compound will be responsible for the tidiness of the berth.
- Each owner will ensure that his/her boat is adequately tied down in the
compound and will provide the necessary pickets and ropes.
- Each owner will ensure his/her boat against third party risks to a value to be
determined from time to time by the General Committee.
- Each owner will ensure that his/her boat is fully seaworthy and has sufficient
buoyancy installed in the boat.
D - In the Compound
- No boat may be sailed without permission of the owner.
- No boat gear may be removed from any boat, nor private launching trolley used without permission of the owner.
- The Rescue boats must be kept on their trolleys and no member is permitted to use these boats nor their engines or equipment without the permission of the Sailing Captain or his Deputy except in an emergency.
E - Cadet Members and Cadet Section Dinghies
Paragraphs 1 to 6 do not apply to Cadets sailing under instruction, in their own or other dinghies, from parents or instructors who shall be deemed to be in charge.
- All Cadets may helm or crew at organised events, subject to the
judgement of the O.O.D. acting on the advice of the Cadet or Sailing
Captains or their Deputy, normally within the area bounded by the inshore
marks.
- NO CADET MAY HELM OR CREW AT OTHER THAN ORGANISED EVENTS
UNLESS THE COMMITTEE HOLD PARENTAL AUTHORITY PERMITTING THIS IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT AT OTHER THAN ORGANISED EVENTS NORMAL CLUB RESCUE FACILITIES WILL NOT BE IN OPERATION.
- It shall be the responsibility of any Cadet wishing to sail on other than
organised events to have the appropriate authority completed and returned
to the General Committee.
- No Cadet may helm at other than organised events unless in possession
of one of the following Certificates of Competence.
- All cadets sailing at other than organised events shall, before going afloat,
enter their name(s) on a notice board to be kept for the purpose and delete
the entry on their return.
- No cadet may helm at other than organised events except during the
period May to Mid September.
- Keys.
7.1 Keys shall be issued to Grade 1 and Grade 2 Cadets.
7.2 No Cadets other than Grade 1 or Grade 2 may unlock the compound.
- Dinghies supplied by the Club to the Cadet Section are for the use of
members of the Cadet Section only. No one may helm these dinghies
without the permission of the Sailing Captain or his/her Deputy.
- Any Cadet rigging a Cadet Section dinghy must ensure that it is derigged,
tied down, covered up (where covers are provided) and all gear stored in the hut. Failure to comply with this rule will carry an automatic disqualification from sailing of two weeks or for such a period as the Sailing Captain shall decide.
F - At Sea
- Life jackets/buoyancy aids must be worn at all times when afloat. Wet
suits on their own do not constitute sufficient buoyancy.
- No boat may be sailed in an offshore wind (i.e. winds from East of a
North/South line unless there are at least two boats afloat each helmed by
members having full adult status sailing separately in the same area. The
special conditions applying to cadet members will be found in Section E
- Members sailing at times other than organised Club meetings shall ensure
that a flag other than the Red Ensign has been hoisted before they go
afloat. The Helm of the last boat ashore will be responsible for striking and
stowing the flag.
- Members Sailing outwith the area bounded by the racing marks shall
enter the following information on a notice board kept for that purpose at
the entry to the Clubhouse:-
Name of boat or sail number
Helm
Number of Crew
Time of departure
Destination
Estimated time to return
It is essential to delete such information on return of the boat to the compound.
