Mentoring FAQ

What does mentoring mean?
Mentoring can have varying levels of complexity depending on the field it is used in, it is frequently used in business and education where an expert can give the benefit of their experience to someone not so experienced.  In our case it is hand on advice and tips from an experienced sailor as you prepare and sail your boat.

How can mentoring help me?

Learning to sail by courses and instruction can only take you so far but tips from an expert who has been sailing and refining their skill for years can make a dramatic improvement to your sailing.

When does mentoring take place and how long does it last?
Mentoring takes place before and after the race each Sunday.  It will probably be at least 3 weeks but this depends on your mentor and progress.

Who can receive mentoring?
Mentoring will be offered to those in the club who are at a stage where they would benefit from it.  This could be those at the end of a training course or those who can sail but need that little bit of encouragement to progress further.

How can I take part in mentoring?
I will keep in contact with those that take a course within the club and offer it to you when you reach a suitable stage.  New members and those already in the club will also be offered it.  If you would like to take part in the scheme let me know.  Contact Iain MacMaster (Membership Secretary)

How is the mentoring set up
When its decided that you would benefit from mentoring we first need to match you up with a mentor we feel is suitable for you. We would then arrange a meeting where your mentor could assess your abilities, this could be while you are training on a Saturday or on a Sunday before the race, your mentor will decide this.  If for what ever reason it is found that a matching is not working then it can be changed.

Do I receive any support material?
Yes - You will receive a pack of information and aids to assist you.

What would a typical mentoring session be like?
This depends on your mentor and your abilities but typically

  1. Before the Sunday race your mentor will discuss such things as the type of race it will be, where the start line is likely to be, the weather, whether it is suitable for you.  If you are having difficulty rigging your boat (club or your own) he will try to help you. etc
  2. He will make sure you get on the water and to the start line in plenty of time
  3. Give you some on the water instruction and tips and possibly practice starts, so that you know where to be when the race starts for real
  4. Note that mentoring will not take place after the 5 minute countdown has started or during the race. The mentor’s chances in the race must not be impaired in any way.
  5. After the race - discussing what went right and what went wrong so that you can do better next time (this could take place in the clubhouse as the results are worked  A nice gesture would be for you to buy your mentor a drink (if applicable)
  6. There are no set goals you must achieve just getting over the start line could be good enough for the first session  .
  7. In the following weeks you will have improved and less support will be required from your mentor but there will always be new aspects you can ask them about.
