Message from the Ladies Sailing Captain
As Ladies Sailing Captain my role is primarily to encourage and facilitate greater club participation by female sailors of all ages and abilities, and we have some new initiatives lined up for this sailing season which we hope might do that.
But firstly - why sail at Prestwick ?. We have a wonderfully spacious sailing area with no rip-tides, rocks, moorings or large motorised craft to have to worry about. If you have a competitive edge then we race every Sunday afternoon April-October and Thursday nights May-August. All are welcome including novices - racing can be a great way to improve your sailing skills. However, going out for an afternoon or evening potter with the sun dipping over Arran is just as much food for the soul, and you might get a porpoise breaching over the bow of your boat ! (it happened to me one evening last summer). Yes it can be chilly at times, but there is good gear out there to keep you warm – we are happy to advise on sailing kit.
In terms of initiatives for female sailors; the club is purchasing two lightweight but stable 1-2 person dinghies that can be borrowed by club members, one of which will be particularly suited to novice sailors. The club also has Lasers for more experienced sailors and Bahias for group sailing. We’d like to organise some sailing sessions on Saturday afternoons and Tuesday evenings (starting in May) when women/girls can come and join other women on the water. If there is sufficient interest we are also considering holding a female-only training course.
Please do get in touch if you are interested in joining or have any other comments or suggestions directed to me as the Ladies Captain –contact the club secretary using the ‘contact us’ page of the club website https://www.prestwicksailingclub.co.uk/contact-us/ and the message will be passed on.
