RYA Safety Boat Course: Powering Protection on the Water
Whether you're looking to sharpen your rescue skills for a local sailing club or aiming for the full RYA certification, this two-day intensive course provides the specialized training needed to support fleet racing, training sessions, and water-based events
Pre-requisites: Participant must have their Powerboat level 2 and 16 years old
Ideally a year of powerboat driving but not essential
Day 1(Saturday): Safety Boat Fundamentals
Perfect for volunteers or those needing a refresher without the pressure of certification.
Day 1 focuses on the core maneuvers and safety protocols required to oversee a fleet. This standalone day covers the "how-to" of basic rescue without the advanced recovery techniques.
- Safety & Preparation: Personal equipment, boat checks, and communication.
- The Rescue Environment: Understanding wind, tide, and safety boat positoning
- Basic Rescue Techniques: Approach and recovery of single-handed dinghies and windsurfers.
- Towing: Establishing simple lines and managing a craft under tow.
Note: Completion of Day 1 only does not qualify the student for an RYA certificate.
Day 2(Sunday): Advanced Recovery & Certification
Must be taken in conjunction with Day 1 for the full RYA Safety Boat qualification.
Day 2 dives into complex scenarios,we move beyond simple capsizes to handle multi-craft incidents and specialized equipment.
- Advanced Dinghy Recovery: Dealing with inversions, entrapments, and lee-shore rescues.
- Multihulls & Keelboats: Specific techniques for catamarans and larger vessels.
- Canoe & Kayak Support: Handling paddlecraft safely.
- Race Management: Setting marks, starting sequences, and fleet patrolling.
- Emergency Scenarios: First aid on the water and coordinating with emergency services.
Please book our 1 day course if you are new powerboating, just passed your powerboat level 2 and want to help out with safety boat at the club.
Please book the two day course if you want the certificate, want more advanced recovery methods and/or planning to go for your senior instructor qualification.][
